Rock Wars
Having a 16-year-old means that there are certain discussions that cause heated debate in the Hotfessional household. I mean, seri-effin’-debate. That make me question whether or not this is indeed a product of my womb.
Case in point. Rock Band. You’ve seen this game? Shortman on guitar. Mr. Hot on drums. Me? Bass or vocals, depending. The good thing is that Shortman gets exposed to some really good music. And we do love music. I used to rock him to sleep to Stevie Ray Vaughan. He learned to sing Bohemian Rhapsody (even though we found a note where he’d written “Bo He-Man Rap City”) start to finish when he was 10. However, he nearly got disowned yesterday by stating that the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ version of Higher Ground was better than Stevie Wonder’s version.
Oh Mah Holy Hell people.
Seriously.
-or-
Let’s get real. How could you not say Little Stevie.
—- Anyone need a Rock Band guitar player? I may have to kick his ass out of the house. —-

Well, if you prefer your song lyrics to be shouted rather than sung, and you prefer a noise accompaniment as opposed to a musical one - why, then, your son is right.
Don’t kick him out. Play decent music in his room while he sleeps. He can still be reeducated.

Oh, and the Stevie Wonder link didn’t work - I had to search for it myself.

I’ve never heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers version, and have no sound card here, so I can’t now either, but seriously, he’s a teenager. His opinions are without merit. And now I’m going be bopping my way through the day with Stevie’s voice in my head. “…till I reach the higher ground…”

I cannot choose! I love the Red Hots and Stevie so much!
Both links worked for me.
At 16, I was singing along to Freda Payne. It’s no wonder I turned out the way I did, really…

It’s a matter of choice. Does he want original musical genius, or does he want a cover band? Cause that ain’t the only song those Chilis covered.

I love me some RHCP but I have to agree with you. Stevie Wonder owns that song.

I played rock band a couple of weeks ago for the first time and it’s awesome. I’ve been wanting to play ever since. I never tried the guitar but I’m pretty amazing on vocals and the drums if I do say so myself.

Don’t hate me, but I’m in the RHCP generation! And I am not familiar with either song, right now…
Poor Little Dude has been exposed to everything from Metallica and AC/DC to Trace Adkins and Crystal Gayle, Bach and Beethoven to Billy Joel and Carly Simon.
I found some great kid CDs that I can handle, if you saw my posts on that (see my “Cows” post), but imagine my surprise when he stopped crying the time “Nothing Else Matters,” by Metallica, came on the radio. Hmm… The poor kid was exposed to a lot of hard rock while I was pregnant. Hopefully he isn’t too warped!

Oh, Stevie - - absolutely! LOVE his music!
RCHP - - meh, not so much. Although they are kinda entertaining when they play wearing nothing but tube socks and a smile . . .;-)
(NOT that I am recommending Shortman does this!)

Neither. They both make my head explode a little.

Okay, I am about to be voted off the island here, but I adore the RHCP version of that song. Stevie Wonder’s version makes me want to pull out my pimp duster and big ol’ feathered “lid” and dance around with a cane a la HuggyBear LOL (Snoop Dogg style - Fashion Fa Shizzle Wit Huggy Bizzle!)
No Seriously! I listen to “old” stuff and I listen to “new” stuff, and I just like the Chili Peppers version better.
I’m with Cheri. I’m not young like Shortman so I’m accustomed to both versions. I will say I love music and I do appreciate the funk sound of SW’s version (I do love Stevie too), but on this one occasion I have to say RHCP CRANKED THIS SONG! Sorry. Just my meager opinion

Stevie Wonder’s impossible to surpass but at least the Chili Peppers are old - only the guitarist is under 45!

The Chilli Peppers annoy me, so definitely Stevie Wonder.

Yep… I’m all for the subliminal re-training while he sleeps. My kids are into Guitar Hero. That way I don’t have to play along but I still get to listen to the music. They’d be in real trouble if they expected ME to sing along, lol.

I don’t need another rock band player…I have three that I am kicking out myself. Maybe they have a boarding school for rock band players?

Nothing but Stevie!
I had a Beatles CD in the other day. Sonny Boy thought that they were really good. Then he wanted to know that if they still toured, could we go to one of their concerts?

Will you still be my friend if I admit that I don’t know the song or either of the bands versions? I MIGHT have heard it from RHCP but just don’t know it.
However, I can totally understand your point.

I think the dance sequence in “Center Stage” set to RHCP’s version of Higher Ground gives it extra points to kick-assness of the song. Youtube it
Stevi’s version will never be surpassed in its funkiness, though. I love em both.

My Husband and his cousin were together Friday night - waging “YouTube” Music wars until the wee hours of the night. I went to sleep with the Red Hot’s blaring, wondering if the neighbor’s thought we had magically produced teenagers.
But, a family that plays together, stays together… so good job.

Ah the young, they have no taste. Isn’t that obvious? Look at what passes for music and fashion for them these days? Seriously. Don’t kick him out. Just nod and know in your heart that he’s just a stupid kid who will have a completely different (and correct) opinion in ten years or less.
