Breathing. Shopping. Is there that much of a difference?

Published by Ree at 11:14 pm under Family, Real Life

I’ve finally convinced Mr. Hot to get his ass to his asthma doctor this week. It’s been a tough winter - the cold air has wreaked havoc with his symptoms - no longer under control like they have been since we moved to Ann Arbor from Royal Oak.

When we first moved back to Michigan in ‘92, he didn’t have asthma. He didn’t have it when I met him in West-by-gawd-Virginia. I found out from his sister that he had shown symptoms when he was younger, but had outgrown it. Then, living in Royal Oak and being retired, he explored the city on his bike. Breathing exhaust fumes from the seat of his 10-speed brought it back. With a vengeance. It wasn’t pretty. Convincing him to see a doctor the first time took a lot of nagging, a lot of tears, and a lot of bribing with, um, cookies. Yea, cookies*. Because, y’know, I think that breathing is a kind of important trait in a husband. (Well, that, and the ability to cook, do laundry, make a vodka-limeade, and give me an orgasm backrub.)

Moving to Nowheresville in the middle of CornfieldLand (Yes, Ann Arbor really is a “city”, but where we live? Not so much.) - where there isn’t the pollution that is found in a bigger city - meant that he could go off Advair. And he hardly ever had to hit his inhaler. Country air really is cleaner.

Until this winter. A walk from the house to the mailbox freezes his lungs. From the parking lot to the grocery store. When we go to basketball games, the walk from the car to the arena means waiting until he can warm up before we go up to our seats. It’s been a miserable winter - cold like it hasn’t been in years, snow like when I was little (and I think I liked it then…but now? suck-ass-snow. I hate it.).

I’ve been back to the nagging, the crying, the, um, cookies. “You have to go to the doctor. You haven’t seen her for over a year.” He, of course, insisted that he’s fine, and it’s not an issue, and {hack, wheeze, hack} he can breathe just fine.

But, when he realized that he didn’t have a refill on his prescription inhaler, he relented and made an appointment. When he had to get up at 3 o’clock this morning because he couldn’t breathe and was having a coughing fit, he said he may even go back on Advair if the doctor recommended it.

Since this doctor is a specialist, and he only sees her (nag, nag, bitch, cry) every 6 months, he doesn’t want to look for a doctor in this area - it’s worth going to someone who knows his history, even if she’s 60 miles away. Being the good wife that I am, I offered to take the day off and go with him. I have some time off that I have to take before the end of March, and it’s nice to have company on the drive. But…

…being the shopping whore that I am, I told him that he could drop me off at my old stomping grounds mall so I can shop while he’s actually having his examination.

—- What? I need some new clothes and some new shoes. Is that so wrong? —-

*Yes, I will say orgasm but not blow job. For blow job, I use “cookies”. I don’t know why, so don’t ask.

Mens love them some cookies, because, well, they’re home made.
I hope Mr. Hot improves with the meds.

We used to refer to it as Burger King. Dairy Queen was the equivalent.

Thankfully he’s going to the doctor and it’s only fair you give him alone time with his doctor and keep yourself busy at the mall. Plus - you know I’ll justify anything that includes shoe shoppng.

I wondered what the asterix was doing next to cookies, thanks for clearing that up….lol.

Oh yes Mr Hot must get that asthma sorted out. Both of my daughters have it though they are slowly growing out of it. It’s so frightening when people can’t breathe. It really kind of ruins your day :(

Tim has really awful acid reflux, and his grandfather passed away from
esophageal cancer and he won’t go to the DR to get it checked out.

Sometimes men are idiots, and it takes a lot for them to actually go to the doctor and get checked out.

Will you let me know buy??
    I’m nosey.

Not from where I’m standing. :D

I agree, though, that men are scared to go to the Dr. You want to know why? Secretly, we’re scared that he’s going to want to give us a prostate exam. That’s why we don’t go if we can help it.

Um, I don’t see a problem here. He will be able to breathe and Ree will be over the moon with her purchases.

Happy Hot, means happy Mr Hot.

So do we get pictures of the shoes? *swoon*

What is it about men and even life threatening conditions that they think they are just totally immune to? 14 or 15 years ago, hub was showing very definite symptoms of Diabetes. He would not go to the Dr. He just thought it was cool that he was losing weight. This was back before the internet and web as we know it now, but we still had Prodigy, and its vast bulletin board system. After weeks of nagging to no avail, I got into a diabetes support board and asked for people to tell me what could happen, besides the obvious DEATH, if he went untreated. I got many many responses and they were not pleasant to read. These came from people who KNEW from experience, and I printed out every one of them and read them to him. Out loud. Made him listen. And then told him “If after this, you still refuse to go to the Dr., and you end up drooling all over yourself, missing your amputated limbs and peeing and worse all over yourself because you can’t get to the toilet, *I* am not going to be wiping your ass. Because this is a CHOICE you are making and you are NOT being fair to me OR your kids. If you make this choice, we are not going to stand around and watch the worst happen.” He was at the Dr. the next day.

Poor man. My asthma is generally not a problem now that I grew up, but the cold harsh air still can drive me to taking a few puffs off the old albuterol. Good luck getting him back into breathing shape. And good for you for shopping while he’s at the doc’s. You deserve it after cookies;)

Good for him for going to the doctor! Men are so bad about that. But yes, breathing is a requirement in a spouse!

Well, I dont like going to the doc, but I am smart enough to know i am not a doctor, and I did stay at a Holiday Inn!

Sounds like he has cold triggered asthma, something that I used to get in my teens, then again when I was in my 40″s. I dont get it that much now. What I do get is mold triggered asthma, spring and fall.

But yeah, he needs to have quick acting stuff like provental and some longer lasting stuff like asthmacort.

As far as cookies, i dont get any :-( LOL

  16. jeanon 25 Feb 2008 at 8:18 pm

Reading the post, I noticed the little asterisk and thought, “wow, she must make him some sort of great cookies, maybe she’s going to share her recipe”. Ha, I had no idea. So much for a chocolate chip or sugar cookie recipe. Now I’m a little disappointed. But that’s ok. As long as Mr. Hot gets his asthma treated and you get some good shopping done.

I had to get off my ass and go get my inhaler script renewed too. That and my sugar strips. Makes me feel young and perky to be stabbing myself to check my sugar and sucking on an inhaler at the same time.
