May’s Perfect Post Award
I don’t often talk about my political views here. In fact, I can only think of a couple of times that I let something slip. It’s not that I don’t have opinions and it’s not that I am afraid of alienating readers (I believe that each and every one of you hold ‘freedom of expression’ near and dear to your heart - or you would have run away screaming long ago) - it’s simply that I don’t always know how to voice my opinions. See, it’s the voice thing that trips me up.
THAT probably has a lot to do with the fact that I am a terrible debater. Seriously. I lose every single argument I have with anyone. Sometimes, I even lose the ones where the person I’m arguing with AGREES with me. How flippin’ sad is that? I can go over my points in my head. I can rehearse in the mirror. I can have facts and figures and data that I’ve pulled out of the most authoritative references that exist.
And then, I open my mouth - and blah, blah, blah, fuck, blah blah blah blah. (Seriously. I haven’t won an argument in 18 years with Mr. Hot.)
So when Mr. Lady wrote this brilliant post - I nearly purchased a plane ticket just so I could go hug her in person. And get her to teach me how the hell she managed to perfectly sum up my views on what the past eight years have done to this country. I’ve traveled to Asia and Europe in the time that W has been president. A British Airways flight attendant told me (two days after the 2004 election) that they were instructed “not to discuss the election with the Americans.” I had a restaurant maitre’d give me a hug in the aftermath of Katrina hitting New Orleans and Mississippi. He told me he was sorry for my countrymen, but that my government was full of idiots. I couldn’t disagree.
I am sad about what the Democratic party is doing - and the stupidity that is going on here in Michigan especially. I have a real fear of what’s going to happen if we end up with Bush 3 in office. Shortman can’t find a summer job. 24 can’t find a job, period. I’m going to be out of work in November - after nearly 30 years of being employed whenever.I.wanted.to.be. This is scary shit people.
And while I’m reduced to sitting here typing “scary shit” because I can’t give articulate voice to my feelings and my fears, Mr. Lady is over here… writing my selection for the Perfect Post for May.
Go read it. “I am not a Democrat. I am not a Republican. I am not an ex-pat. I am an AMERICAN. That is all.” Thank you, Mr. Lady, for speaking for those of us who don’t always have the words.
—- And thank you to Kimberly at Petroville and Lindsay at Suburban Turmoil for allowing anyone who wants (why aren’t you participating?) in the Perfect Post awarding. —-

I know what you mean about sharing politics on the blog, so I’m off to check off your choice for the Perfect Post… I’m worried about how we’re going to manage the next few years, too…
RC’s last blog post..I’m counting on you, world?
You are so right, there is not a single candidate that doesn’t scare me in some way. We need some serious changes, not a new dancing puppet.

[...] fat wet kissy hugs to Hotfessional for nominating this post for Petroville and Suburban Turmoil’s May 08 Perfect [...]
I never write about politics simply because I get all red in the face, my vision fails, and I go into apolectic fits. Considering that GWB has made sure that I can’t afford health insurance, I just can’t take the chance.

I am stealing you from Mr Hot. We are getting married and having little babies. Tell him, he’s on notice, yo.
Mr Lady’s last blog post..Rate the Hate Version East Meets West
I love her post, too! I am a moderate as well, and I hate our choices for President this year. I have no idea who I’m going to vote for. I wish there was a clear choice of someone who really wants to change things, not just provide handouts.
Shelly’s last blog post..Happy Sigh~
I generally don’t talk politics on my blog either, although that’s more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule. Sometimes one slips through. But I don’t for an entirely different reason: I’m just right of the Kaiser, and among the 23% of people who are still a Bush fan.

See? I told you there was a reason I didn’t discuss politics.
I’ll go now to read Mr. Lady’s post…I always like a well-reasoned, well-argued point (even if I end up disagreeing, I still appreciate the argument). But let me now go read it.
Hank’s last blog post..Too Stupid To Live
Oh I can’t even touch the political issues in this country. I am too scared to face up to it all. And there is no way I would be able to state anything about it in a classy way. Not the way I do everything else *snort*.

Oh, Hank….I’m just going to apologize to you here. Please don’t hurt me.
Mr Lady’s last blog post..A Squadron of Conflicting Rebellions
Despite my degree in Political Science I always feel very inadequate when attempting to discuss politics… especially the kind of politics we are facing currently. Thank you for the opportunity to read a clear/concise breakddown of what we’re looking at in the near future.
Jenny’s last blog post..A Question of Ethics
I enjoyed that post a lot. Pretty new header too!
I don’t know if I have the chops to put another one up yet.
I’m all coded out for now.
witchypoo’s last blog post..Perfect Post and More
Great post!!! Both yours and hers. Leaves alot for thinking.
I try to not discuss national politics on JB. Local, yes, because clearly our mayor aka Buddy needs to think before he does things (and it’s funny to see City Hall read it from time to time. Finally they removed the lifesize effigy of Buddy from the window after how many posts about how stupid it is and how much time and money do they waste dressing it up) but national politics - I’m a fraidy cat with that.
I already poked the bear with my religion post. Politics might seriously get me in trouble.
Thanks for posting this and being one of the brave ones.

I just wrote a pretty long post, much longer than I thought I had in me (or that I thought I had time for) rebutting Mr. Lady. In case you’re interested.

Here is my comment over on Mr. Lady’s great post:
Ree and Witchypoo have my vote on this issue! When you stop and think about it, almost half of all Americans have disagreed with dubya since the first election, but he and his arrogant handlers decided that winning by a percentage or two was a MANDATE of some kind to sell out to big business, while claiming “executive privilege” every time they chose to break the law, and unfortunately having a majority in congress throughout most of his reign, they, so far, have gotten away with doing to us and the world whatever they damn well please, all the while branding desenters as “un-American.” What a crock! Great post, Mr. Lady; Thank you!
Thanks, Ree, for sharing this with us!

Wow. Just wow. (and thanks).
Shania’s last blog post..Through the garden
I’m going to read it now, but just like you, I am loath to talk politics too much in the blogophere–it’s a little too personal and lately far too divisive and frankly? I’m just in here for the fun mostly. That said, I do enjoy a provocative post–so thanks:)
melissa’s last blog post..The Circle of Life
Excellent, and I’m glad you linked to that post. I definitely understand your frustration. It’s hard to know what any of us can do that can have a solid impact.
Jennifer H’s last blog post..…But now I’m found
Hmmm…very interesting post. I have a feeling that we would have a lot of the same political views (but not ALL the same ~ that would just be boring LOL)
I don’t feel that we have to necessarily “hide” our viewpoints, or keep them to ourselves, but I do feel that they should always be presented in an honorable, clear, and concise manner. Which, I believe, the poster (Mr Lady) nailed to perfection. An award well deserved!! Congrats Mr Lady!!
((Man alive! I am way into the “Big Verbage” tonight! That’s deep, yo! LOL))
Great post, Ree. If debates were done in writing, you’d win - hands down!

I can never write something like that because I don’t have nearly all the facts.
We do a monthly newsletter for customers and it gets more and more depressing each month. The economy hasn’t been this bad in almost 30 years. It’s sad. And we need a change.
