Am I the only geek around here who watches Sheer Genuis? Yes?? (It’s cool - I’m secure.)

Last night the show (generally a dumb hair cutting reality contest show) was all about women with alopecia! The hair stylists had to cut their wigs to help them look good. While it will not be confused with Great Drama any time, it did a nice job of explaining about alopecia and of showing women with their un-haired heads (is that right? it sound odd to say it that way…) and then the process of them working with the stylists on their wigs. It was cool that a few of them talked about not wearing wigs all the time, but wanting an option. And, it was really interesting to hear about different women working with the alopecia. If you are intersted, they replay those shows a few hundred times during the week. (The description was something about a helmet.)

I immediately thought, “I hope the Hotfessional (who I have never actually met in real life but who responded very nicely to a comment I left, when I really needed to hear a good word, and whose blog I love reading every day) is watching this! Apparently all the cool kids are getting alopecia these days! How awesome!!” So getting to see you showing off your head and your earrings was a little extra neat today. (And damn, girl; I’m impressed by those earrings! You have to be extra nifty to pull off that look, and you are doing it magnificently!)

I have an autoimmune disease as well, but much the more boring Sjogren’s Syndrome; my immune system is merely killing off my moisture-producing glands, so I have to drink water all day long and wear my sunglasses all the time to help combat the dry mouth and dry eyes. (Fortunately, I think I look very cool in my sunglasses - which is a little harder to pull off in the grocery store at ten at night, when people generally tend to suspect you are covering up a massive hangover or something.) The bouts of severe joint pain and “debilitating fatigue” (as stated in the literature) are fun too, and I look on them as a really good excuse to stay in bed all day when sick. Now, if I could just train my husband to wait on me, I’d really have it made!

Fucking immune systems; is there some kind of warranty card we were supposed to send it along the way?

But - congratulations to you on being brave and being tough, and managing to make it all look good!!!!!

ree - i know what it feels like to lose your hair, or at least part of it. a couple of years ago, my hair started to fall out in clumps in the shower and it was just awful. to this day, the back part is a little bit wonky…i have to keep my hair cut and combed a certain way to hide it. but i am one of the lucky ones, most of my hair stayed where it belonged.

from my heart, i know how scared you were to click publish…and i think you look beautiful.
