Save The Boobies - Part 2

Published by Ree at 3:55 pm under Contest!, Save-The-Boobies

October! Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink! Ribbons!

The Hotfessional Family contributes to several worthy causes, but at some point in my life (possibly when both my maternal grandmother and my great-grandmother were diagnosed), I determined I would do my best, do whatever small part I could, in the search for a cure for this awful disease.

So, y’know, not being a doctor or a researcher, I, um, talked about feeling yourself up examining your breasts every month. And preached(!) talking to your doctor if you notice anything abnormal. And I bought stuff - pink stuff - so that the people who made that pink stuff would donate money to the people who could do the research.

Shortly after I started blogging, I ran across Lawmom’s site. Kim’s a survivor. She’s also an awesome person; she gives spirit-raising virtual hugs. Then I read WhyMommy, and followed Susan’s horrendous fight and ultimate victory against Inflammatory Breast Cancer. These women, and many others like them could be your sister, your best friend. They could be you or me.

Last year was the first “Save The Boobies” contest. Consider it Part 1 if you will. There were prizes. I gave money to Susan G. Komen. (Which, let’s face it, I would have given anyway, but it was more fun because, y’know, did I mention? I was also giving prizes!)

This year, I’m doing STB Part 2. Do you want to know the rules to enter? It’s pretty easy.

  1. Leave me a comment on this point - 1 entry for you!
  2. LINK to this post - 1 entry for you!

Easy, right? Here’s what you could win:

Pink wristbands - 4 winners

Promise, Hope, Cure notecards - 1 winner

Promise Necklace - 1 winner

So, to recap.

  1. Comment on this post - 1 entry
  2. Link to this post - 1 entry

You then have two chances to win a prize.

Here’s what I have to do.

  1. Order prizes.
  2. Keep track of entries in a spreadsheet.
  3. Use my favorite random number generator to pick the winners on October 31st
  4. Mail the winners their prizes. Using snail mail. Which may involve packaging and weighing and post office-type stuff.

See! I have way more stuff to do than you.

Oh wait! I left out the MOST IMPORTANT PART. For EACH entry (whether it’s a comment or a link), I’ll donate $1 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Up to $150.

(I like to spread the love, so BCRF gets the big pot this year…I am buying the prizes from the S.G.K. site, though, so they’re not going empty-handed.)

Now, when you link, you can steal that awesome pink ribbon image up there at the top to show everyone how stylin’ you are. If you need the code, just email me. I’m all about the sharing.

And now, to be serious. Last year, someone commented that I shouldn’t focus on the boobs. This is about saving lives of women and men everywhere. Of course it is. It’s not really about saving boobs. I mean, they’re nice and all (Mr. Hot is a HUGE fan!) - and y’know, I’m not even certain it’s about raising awareness. How could anyone NOT be aware?!? But see, here’s the thing… people need to be reminded that this disease is not yet cured. Women need to be reminded to do their exams. And every little bit gets us closer to a cure. And oh mah holy hell y’all. If we can find a cure for breast cancer, maybe…someday, we’ll find a cure for muscular dystrophy. Or Parkinsons. Or Multiple Sclerosis. Or even Alopecia. Stepping off my soapbox now. Hopefully not falling on my face.

—- C’mon. Comment. Link. Not so much to ask, is it? Make me write that check. —-

My ma~inlaw, the intrepid character that she is, had a double mastectomy at age 80! I think if I had been in her position….at age 80….I would have just given up. But she is a trooper. She was asking for her lipstick almost as soon as she woke up from the surgery. Within a couple of days, she was asking us to take her out to her favorite restaurant! She is now 84 and still going strong!

Thanks, Ree, for stepping up and really getting the message out there. Hopefully, someday we will find a cure!

Oh, it goes without saying I will comment, today of all days! In fact, I was thinking the best present my son got for his birthday today was one he didn’t even know about: the all-clear from my call-back mammogram (that was scary) today. Though I suppose it’s possible he doesn’t actually want me around, come to think of it…. ;) But seriously: great post, great idea!

I had a double mastectomy and reconstruction in 2006 following a second primary breast cancer, the first was in 1997. My sister died of it aged 43 in 1998. Two of my maternal cousins have it too, one is terminal now. Check those boobs girls! Donate what you can, we need a cure. No need to send a prize if my number comes up, one, because I’m in Australia and two, I think I have just about every bit of merchandise going lol, and I’m including the new improved silicone boobies that defy gravity in there - that’s the silver lining in my cloud ;-)
