New Surroundings

Published by Ree at 7:21 am under Chicago and The Hotfessional

This has to be a very, very fast post because I moved into my new apartment today and there’s no real internet access (thank you to whoever hasn’t locked down their signal) and yes, I’m actually stealing the web to write this.

Also, there’s no cooking gas. THAT is nearly impossible to steal, I think, so I am going to have to call tomorrow to find out how to get it turned on. Apparently, this guy did NOT cook. And, granted, he’s an actor who was working as a waiter and probably brought home all kinds of leftovers, but a warning would have been nice. Y’know, “Sorry Hotfessional, but I didn’t actually pay my bill for the cooking gas, so don’t stock up on a bunch of FOOD that needs to be COOKED.”

I had cheese and crackers for dinner.

There is a coffee maker though. And, a half bottle of tequila in the pantry.

There’s a dog barking outside, NPR is on the radio (the guy also had no television), the radiator is hissing (I hope it’s supposed to be making that noise), and I have a shelf full of someone else’s books to snoop around in peruse. I also have work that I should be doing, but I’m just going to ignore that for the time being.

What? Tell me you’ve never ignored that “to do” list. Yea, I didn’t think so.

I will take some crappy camera phone pictures to show you my new digs soon. Until then, just picture me sitting on the bed with my laptop tilted towards the window hoping that I don’t lose this signal. AGAIN.

—- I’ve never lived anyplace that had radiators before. Does it always sound like it’s going to explode off the wall? —-

Edited to say: I don’t know why my comments were turned off – and isn’t it just like me that I ask a question and then give no way to actually, y’know, get answers? They should be working now. Geez. And thanks to MommyTime for giving me the heads-up.

Can’t wait to see the new digs. Does this mean less commuting?

I think they hiss, that’s how they let off the steam or something. Glad you’re into somewhere new. I’m so sorry about your apartment. I know fire is one of your worst fears. I’m glad you were far away when it happened (really, you couldn’t get much farther away could you?). I hope you settle in well and get some gas. Maybe you’ll find cash stashed in the pages of the books!

Oh, they hiss and rattle, depending on how old they are. And they sometimes drip.

I do NOT miss radiators. Although, I do miss free heat.

Radiators do tend to be a little noisier than forced hot air. Let me know if they start making a loud knocking sound and I’ll teach you how to bleed them. (Just so you know, it’s not as dramatic as it sounds.)

Congrats on the new digs. Is there at least a microwave? Honestly, I think I could survive a very long time with a microwave and a hot plate. But then, cooking isn’t my thing. My middle name is Stouffer’s.

We don’t have radiators down here in the jungle. However, I would consult with someone else that has one and see what they say about the hissing… maybe you’ve offended it and it’s just mad at you.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the gas. I mean I could live for 6 to 9 months on cheese, crackers, coffee and tequila. Given enough of it, of course.
I am happy you are getting settled!

I have extremely old radiators that don’t hiss. May I suggest you check them for snakes?

Yuo. Maybe it’s snakes under the floor. If they’re properly maintained and the installations right, they shouldn’thiss or make any other sound.

Check the books for first editions? Hmm… probably not… but you never know.

-Shania: STEAM???? You’ve got your heat up WAY too high – my kinda girl in fact ;)

Yes, radiators hiss. However, if it’s spitting and leaking, your super probably needs to come relieve some of the pressure from the radiator. You should also be able to control how much heat — well, let me just say that they are not finely tuned instruments. It’s either too hot and I have a window open so I don’t die, or it’s freezing because the radiators aren’t on. Have fun with that. One word of warning, do not try to adjust the radiator with your bare hand. Those knobs get hot! Use a wash cloth or something.

And I’m sure you’ve already thought about this with the gas thing — have you lit the pilot light?
