Movie Clip Wednesday – Best Adaptation of Book to Movie

Published by Ree at 12:36 am under AB's Movie Clips

There is no such animal. The End.

Naw, I take that back. The nicest of the nice, Anonymous Boxer, has this thing she does every Wednesday. She comes up with a theme, and asks for movie clips that epitomize that theme. In your humble opinion, of course. (Which blogger out there has a humble opinion?)

So, this week, “Best Adaptation of a Book to Movie” had me stumped. I just don’t think that there’s any kind of comparison. Casting has much to do with it, I’m sure. For instance, I can state, with certainty, that Molly Ringwald was a beyond-awful Frannie Goldsmith (okay, The Stand was a made-for-TV-movie, but still). And of course, once you’ve seen the movie, every time you read the book you picture the characters as the actors (seriously, I dare you to read Bridget Jones’ Diary without hearing and seeing Renee Zellweger in every entry).

Shush. Yes, I re-read Bridget Jones every once in a while time I run out of new books and absolutely, positively NEED to read something.

But. In the interest of playing my friend’s game (and saving you from Reason #28,362 I hate moving), I give you this.

—- The movie didn’t have the same impact on me as the book, but the casting? Awesome. Freakin’ awesome. —-

Sleepers is a better movie to watch than the book to read.

And Mystic River was pretty much right down to the book…

I thought “High Fidelity” was surprisingly close to the book. Not the thing to see the day after getting dumped, though, take my word for it.

I never read the book but this is a great movie. Anthony Hopkins was absolutely brilliant. The first time I saw the escape scene I couldn’t get it out of my head for days. I’ll take your word that the book was very good and that movie adaptation was ok. But I like the movie just the same.

    Happy MCW!

Truly? The Grinch was even better as a movie (the original, made-for-TV movie) than the book.

The Jane Austen Book Club–the movie was better than the book.

Two excellent movies from books: A Room With A View, and Cold Comfort Farm.

I can’t think of any book-to-movie adaptation that didn’t suck in some way. The first two Harry Potter movies were decent, but that’s all I can think of right now.

“Sense and Sensibility” was a horrible adaptation and still grinds me to this day.

Oh, I’m late, but great pick. Anthony Hopkins! *sigh* Big crushee on him starting when I was only 15 and saw him in the BBC version of WAR AND PEACE. *sigh*

The TV version of The Shining is was what made me realize, the movie version was actually good.

Happy Movie Clip Wednesday, on Thursday!

Thanks for playing, now go back and unpack those boxes!

The screen play could have been crap and the movie would have still been decent just due to the acting being so outstanding. However the writing was excellent and, well, the movie was, too.
    Good pick!

There’s not much that can make Shakespeare even better than he already is but Michael Radford’s adaptation of Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino — AWESOME!

Good pick! That one is definitely a good adaptation. The only movie I think is better than the book is Shawshank Redemption. They made a couple key changes from the short story that REALLY improved it. Other than that, no movie comes close to the book!
